DWU Annual Service, Giving Event Scheduled
The annual DWU Cares event will be held May 4-5. A combination of the former “Great Wesleyan Giveback” and “A Day for Wesleyan,” this unique service project spans two days for students, faculty and staff to fan out across the Mitchell community performing service projects preceding the annual online event designed to raise money for the Wesleyan Scholarship Fund.
McGovern Center director and associate professor of religion and philosophy Dr. Joel Allen is chairing the service event this year. “The McGovern Center, as a central focus, seeks to encourage service to others through hard work, humility, creativity and compassion. Nothing lines up with our mission more than organizing DWU Cares. Planning began months ago and involves coordinating with multiple community partners. The best part is that everyone enjoys the day and comes away with the good feeling of having done something to demonstrate that DWU truly cares for the Mitchell community.”
Teams will perform a variety of service projects from 9:00 to 11:30 a.m. including at the Mitchell Municipal Golf Course, Graceland Cemetery, LifeQuest, Dry Run Creek, Lake Mitchell, Pepsi Soccer Complex, Mitchell Area Community Theatre, EMBE, Carnegie Resource Center, Mitchell Area Safehouse, Firesteel Health Care, Avera Brady, Edgewood, Wesley Acres, First United Methodist Church, Cabela Drive, Corn Palace, Cadwell Park, First Lutheran Preschool, Wild Oak Golf Course and across the campus.
Participants are encouraged to post their service project on social media platforms using the hashtag #DWUcares.
At the conclusion of service projects, students and staff members will return to campus for lunch and a carnival celebration to kick off the fundraising event. 100% of Dakota Wesleyan University students receive scholarship assistance. This annual event helps to raise money for the Wesleyan Scholarship Fund. Several challenges have been issued and will be released on social media throughout the two-day event.
