Evolution of the Chamber of Commerce
In an effort to expand the economic foundation and growth of Mitchell, a group of business and professional people organized the first civic promotional group. This was accomplished in 1883 under the name of the Mitchell Board of Trade. The objectives of this group would include 'securing and locating in Mitchell manufacturing, mercantile, educational and other interests that would promote the growth of town'.
The Board solicited correspondence from manufacturers, capitalists and businessmen who might wish to invest in anyway, providing maps and relevant information. Sidewalk construction along Main Street and most notably, the first Corn palace (1892) were among their earliest projects.
With some organizational changes in approximately 1895, this first civic group became know as Mitchell's Businessman League. Functioning for several years, this group evolved into the Mitchell Commercial Club in 1914. Apparently, this group did not meet the need because another, as a separate group known as the Retail Merchants Association, began at the same time. Since the objectives of both groups were so similar, on March 23, 1917 they merged into a Chamber of Commerce, and on September 6, 1921 became incorporated.
In 1973, another change took place in changing the Chamber of Commerce into what is now known as the Mitchell Area Chamber of Commerce.
