As the Director of Parks, Recreation, and Forestry, Kevin Nelson has not only embraced his professional role but seamlessly woven his personal narrative into the rich fabric of Mitchell’s community. Let's delve into the Nelsons' story, exploring their move to Mitchell, their experiences, and the unique charm of the Palace City.

Kevin Nelson's story begins with a twist of fate. Introduced to his future wife, Doreen, by her brother – one of his Tae Kwon Do students – the two embarked on a journey that led them to Mitchell. The Nelson family made the move in 2021 with their grown daughter Cydney (28) and her dog Layla, bringing with them not just their belongings but also the enthusiasm for a new chapter, while their son Landon (25) remained in MN.

Born in New Ulm, Minnesota, Kevin's childhood was marked by various moves, instilling in him a sense of adaptability. Career opportunities and the desire to be closer to family brought the Nelsons to Mitchell, a decision influenced by the discovery of a promising career opening and the allure of being near Doreen's family.

Their arrival in Mitchell was not without its challenges, particularly in adjusting to the unique street names, a departure from the sequential numbering in their previous communities. Yet, despite these minor hurdles, the Nelsons found comfort in the community, highlighting the friendly faces at City Hall, Park and Rec, and among their fellow citizens.

Kevin and his family wasted no time in immersing themselves in Mitchell's vibrant scene. From attending performances at DWU and MHS to participating in local parades and First Friday events, the Nelsons embraced the city's cultural offerings. Kevin, an avid fitness enthusiast, discovered the joy of walking and biking on the single-track trails around Lake Mitchell.

In his role as Director of Parks, Recreation, and Forestry, Kevin has actively contributed to the growth of Mitchell's recreational offerings. Noteworthy among his achievements is the securing of a $195,000 grant for the construction of pickleball courts in Hitchcock Park in 2025. The local pickleball community has also rallied, matching the grant with over $100,000, showcasing the collaborative spirit within Mitchell.

Noting an absence in a community for other newcomers, Kevin’s wife, Doreen, found herself employment at the Mitchell Area Chamber of Commerce as their Community Concierge – a position she cloned after a program run in their previous home of Austin, MN – Doreen works with employers and their newly transplanted employees by creating events and a network for those new to the area to get involved in. She doesn’t stray far from Kevin either while also teaching fitness classes at the Mitchell Rec Center.

When asked about his favorite places and experiences, Kevin modestly mentions no specific favorites yet, emphasizing the richness of Mitchell's diverse restaurants and events. His advice to newcomers echoes this sentiment, encouraging them to dare to be involved and explore the array of parks, events, and activities the city has to offer.

As the Nelsons settle into their new life in Mitchell, Kevin's final message is clear: get out and enjoy everything Mitchell has to offer. Whether it's the warmth of the community, the diverse events, or the promise of exciting developments like the pickleball courts, Mitchell is a city brimming with opportunities for newcomers and long-time residents alike.
